“At low tide 'ropaks' [standing floes – T.Zh.] were formed on the exposed riverbed (now there are trees growing on it), and we used to crawl underneath them as children, playing hide-and-seek and catch-up. And as soon as the ice started to crack, it meant that the water was rising, and we quickly climbed out so that the ice would not crush us”
