Храм/The church
Вот такие нам нравятся сооружения (показывает на монастырь). Очень нравятся. И в храм сходим… когда положено. Здесь ничего красивее нет!»
• “These are the edifices we like (points at the monastery). We really like them. We attend the church…when we're supposed to. There is nothing more beautiful here!”

Заяцкие острова /
The Zayatsky Islands
«Там такая тундровая зона красивая! Я часто туда на лодке езжу. На большом [острове – Р.П.] такая антропогенная зона, куча всякого народу, поэтому езжу на малый»
“The tundra zone is so beautiful there! I often go there by boat. On the large island there is such an anthropogenic area, there are lots of people, so I go to the small one”
«Я когда туда приезжаю, то могу завалиться в травку и поспать, отдохнуть, а потом сварить себе чайку на костре, выпить винца»
“When I come there, I like to lie on the grass and take a nap, then make myself some tea on the fire, or even have some wine”

Место строительства больницы/
The hospital construction site
«Больница – это самая большая печаль. Начали строить, но не достроили»
“The hospital is the biggest sorrow. They started building it but never finished”
«Нет договоренности с Карелией, что можно к ним в больницу обращаться, приходится к Архангельск лететь»
“There is no agreement with Karelia that we can go to their hospital, so we have to fly to Arkhangelsk”

Школа /The school
«Согласно планам, у нас должны быть и очистные сооружения, и школа новая, и садик новый, и музыкальная школа новая, но каждый год эти планы всё меняют и меняются, поэтому ничего нет. Ничего абсолютно нет!»
“According to development plans, we were supposed to have a sewage treatment facility, a new kindergarten, and a new music school, but every year these plans change, and we have nothing! Absolutely nothing!”

Белецкая Баня/
The Beletskaya Bathhouse
«Здесь есть здание бани – самой старой в России 1717 года. Сейчас она закрыта и предлогом для её закрытия был ремонт. С тех пор она [баня – Р.П.] так и не появилась, хотя потребность в этом есть»
There is a building of a bathhouse, the oldest in Russia, built in 1717. It is closed now, and the pretext for closing it down was to start renovation works. Since then the bathhouse has not been functioning, although the village really needs one”.
«Раньше была баня, общая баня. Все туда приходили, разговаривали. Сейчас все досками заколочено»
“There used to be a bathhouse, a public bathhouse. People used to go there and talk. Now it is boarded up”

«Мы с женой ходим туда. Есть места, где и кострища есть, можно костер развести, посидеть. Тот же мыс Лабиринтов»
“My wife and I go there. There are campfire sites, you can make a fire, and repose. Take, for example, the Cape of labyrinths”

Кладбище/The cemetery
«Кладбище – это место радости. Место воссоединяется с теми, кого уже нет»
“The cemetery is a place of joy. It reunites you with those who are gone”
«Завтра будет день, когда все на кладбище пойдут, сегодня все собираются. Раньше группами собирались, ходили. У каждого там кто-то есть»
“Tomorrow is the day when everyone will go to the cemetery, today everybody is getting ready. Everybody has someone buried there”
«Соловки – это кладбище, это определяет тональность мировосприятия. Люди живут на кладбище! Соловки были кладбищем задолго до появления монастыря. И остров, по определению, – это инобытийное пространство»
“The Solovetsky Islands are a cemetery, and it defines your mode of perception. The people live at the cemetery! Solovki were a cemetery long before the foundation of the monastery. And the archipelago is, by definition, simply another plane of existence”

Озера/The lakes
«Есть озеро, которое мне очень нравится! Это – озеро Большое Зеленое, с прозрачной чистой водой. Там есть домик небольшой. Там можно остановиться тем, кто приезжает на озера порыбачить»
“There is a lake which I like very much. It is called Bolshoye Zelenoye Lake (Big Green Lake), the water is bright and clear there. There is a small house there. Those who come fishing to the lake, can stay in this house”

Море/The sea
«Морю мы рады. Это и воздух для нас, и вода… всё!»
“We take delight in the sea. It is the air, and the water, it is everything for us”
«Каждый раз интересно ходить на море, ведь оно разное… Я сама в Комарово живу, там и выход к морю недалеко есть, лес с грибами, тишина и спокойствие»
“It is always interesting to walk by the sea, because it is so different…I personally live in Komarovo, and there is a passage to the sea nearby, and there is a forest full of mushrooms, and peace and quiet…”
«Мне нравится! С моря заходишь, монастырь на солнышке хорошо смотрится, красиво. Красиво очень!»
“I like it! When you approach the monastery from the sea, it looks very beautiful in the sunlight. Very, very beautiful!”

Prosperity Bay (Blagopoluchiya)
«Стыдно – это самый центр, но очень грязно! Туда ведь всю канализацию сливают! На отливе всё видно. Очень больно на это смотреть: море зеленое, водоросли умирают»
“It's a shame – it's the very center, but it's very dirty! All the wastewater is drained there! At low tide, you can see all the sewage. It's very painful to look at it: the sea is green, and the algae are dying”

Бараки, ул. Заозерная, Музей СЛОНа/The barracks on Zaozernaya Street, The Museum of SLON (Solovki special prison)
«Я никак не могу посетить детские бараки. Пробовала три раза. Хочу сходить на экскурсию или просто посмотреть, но я захожу на крыльцо, меня душат слезы, я ухожу. Это бывало одномоментно, проходит месяц, я опять… мне интересно посмотреть, как там дети жили. И вот Горький же посещал. Я опять захожу и плачу. Так я до сих пор и не сходила. Не могу»
“I cannot make myself go inside children’s barracks. I went there three times. I want to take a tour around, or just have a look, but when I get up on the porch, I start to choke with tears and I leave. This happened once, then a month passed, and I got curious again to see how children lived there. Maxim Gorky visited these barracks, too. So again, I went there and started to cry. I haven’t been able to visit these barracks so far. I simply cannot”
