А потом там в одной церкви был клуб, вот, до этого клуба [каменного клуба – Т.Ж.] всё время клуб был там, а в другой – склад»

“Oh, the churches were closed… What year was that? Probably, sometime after the revolution; my mother told me about it (she was born in 1909). She told me that they removed the bells from the churches. And then in one of the churches they opened a club, before the other club [the brick one – T.Zh.] was built, and in the other church they organized a warehouse”

«В летней-то церкви шили лодки, делали там. Почему-то в этой церкви. Мы как-то заходили. Мы же тогда вот почему-то особо не интересовались, а старых-то людей, таких, которые всё очень хорошо помнили-то, уже и нет. Потом в склад-то они переделали, мне что-то запомнился он, что не квадратный, а шестигранник»

“In the summer church they made boats. For some reason, they did it in there. We would drop by sometimes. At that time, we were not much interested, so we did not ask much, and now the old people who remembered everything are gone. Then the church was turned into a warehouse, and I remember it being hexagonal, not square”

«Поповка-то место и называется – там, говорят, попы хоронились. Ну там, у церквей… Там же ограда была. Я даже помню её: такая, столбы были, но всё было деревянное. А потом чего-то вот клубы-то да всё сделали, потом штакетником огородили. Там черемух много было! Очень! Всё вдоль деревни, вдоль церквей-то»

“‘Popovka’ is the name of the place because they say the priests were buried there [from the Russian word ‘pop’ meaning ‘priest’ – T.Zh.]. Right there, by the churches... There was a fence. I even remember it, there were posts, and it was made of wood. And when the clubs were opened there, and they fenced it with a picket fence. There were a lot of bird cherry trees there! A lot! All along the village, and by the churches”

«Было церкви две – летняя и зимняя. Зимнюю [вероятно, летнюю церковь – Т.Ж.] снесли, потом под ней было (туда всё овцы собирались) как-то из кирпича крепко-крепко [фундамент церкви – Т.Ж.]. А вторая тоже была долго-долго. Потом из неё клуб сделали, там и кино крутили, а потом и её разрушили»

“There used to be two churches - a summer one and a winter one. The winter church was torn down [the interviewee might be mistaking it for the summer church – T.Zh.], there was a brick foundation left, where the sheep used to flock. And the second one stood for a very-very long time, it used to be a club, and they used to play movies there, but later it was demolished, too”

«Зимняя церковь [вероятно, летнюю церковь – Т.Ж.] на кирпичах таких была, крепко стояла, хорошая была первая церковь. Её первую разрушили. Основание долго стояло. Ой-ой-ой сколько стояло! Наверное, все 50-е годы стояло основание. Туда овцы под них лазали всё. Если искать ходили, так «где овцы?» – а там наверняка, от оводов да от чего прячутся под церковью»

“The winter church [probably the summer church – T.Zh.] was built on a high brick foundation, it was very solid, it was a good church. It was demolished first. But the foundation stood for a very long time. Oh, indeed, it was there for a very long time. It was there, maybe throughout the whole 1950s. The sheep used to get in there. If one went looking for the sheep (‘Where are the sheep?’), they’d probably be found hiding under the church from gadflies and whatnot”
