«Да, здесь вот клуб, это вот раньше, вот здесь вот включался этот, как его, какой-то мотор и кино. Заведут что-то, тарахтелку [киноаппарат – Т.Ж.] эту – и в клуб туда проведено и показывают фильмы. Ходили же мы на фильмы-то на все на эти. Интересно было»

 “Yes, there used to be a club here. There they would start the apparatus, what do you call it, and they would feature some films. They would start this whirring machine [the movie projector – T.Zh.], and they would play all those films. We went to the cinema a lot. It was interesting”

«Танцы под гармонь были. Свои гармонисты были, местные играли. Вот знаете, раньше было столько народу! Много играли на гармошке. Я помню, знаете, был такой вальс, то ли «Дунайские волны», то ли как. В клуб-то ведь нас пускали, только уже когда мы школу закончили, потом… Играет гармошка, а мы бегаем кругом, нам так хочется в клуб, но нас не пускали. Говорят, ещё малы были. Вот так вот»

“People used to dance to the harmonica. The harmonica players were all the local guys. You know, there used to live many people here. And many could play the harmonica in those days. I remember one waltz, it was called ‘The Waves of the Danube’ or something. They did not let us go into the club. We needed to finish school first, only then we could go the club. So when the harmonica was playing, we ran around the club and wanted to get in, but they did not let us. ‘You are too young,’ they used to say”

«Так у нас там избушка, заведут эту дрючку-то [киноаппарат – Т.Ж.], и там, в общем, поднимаешься в кинобудку – лестница была, и окно. А окно-то всё равно зашторено. Так мы просим, кто старше-то нас: «Расшторьте окно, чтоб мы видели». Зайдем у кинобудки на лестницу и смотрим кино, ничего не слышим, просто смотрим. Вот так ещё было»

“There was a small projection booth, where they started ‘the rattler’ [the movie projector – T.Zh.], and there was a staircase leading to the booth, and a window. The window was curtained off. We would ask, those of us who were older: ‘Please draw back the curtains, so that we could see,’ and we would watch the movie, without sound, we would just watch it. That’s how it was”

“Sometimes in the club, when I was 14 or 15 years old, I remember, that after a festival or a movie, they would move the chairs to the walls and dance. They would play the music for half an hour or so. There used to be one dance, ‘Kolkhoznaya’. I could not master it properly! It was very beautiful! ‘Kolkhoznaya’, or a waltz”
