«В церкви было уже сделано как клуб: сцена, будка, чтобы кино показывать. Киноаппараты стояли. Все фильмы советские, какие были. Я даже в 1972 году ходила, смотрела “Женщина, которая поёт”, он [клуб] ещё тогда не сгорел. Мы с соседкой бегали в кино, смотрели фильмы»

“The church was turned into the club: there was a stage, and a film booth. There were film projectors, too. All the films were Soviet. In 1972, I still went there, and even watched “The Woman who Sings” [a Soviet film], the club was still functioning; it had not yet burned down. I went there with my neighbor; we went to the cinema together”

«Раньше был клуб в зимней церкви. Да, там были печи. Ну, там как бы не было ни купола ведь, ничего – просто крыша такая. Большое здание. Помню, с пацанами ходили там. Было заколочено там, потому что уже часть-то пришла в негодность. Ну а где клуб – там, с другой стороны, крыльцо прорубили, и киношку катили там да танцы. Молодежь собиралась»

“There used to be a club in the winter church. Yes, and it was heated with stoves. Well, there was no dome, nothing – just a regular roof. It was a large building. I remember we used to go there with my pals. It was boarded up, because some parts of the building were already unfit for use. And where the club was, from the other side of the building, an entrance was cut through, and movies and dances were held there. Young people gathered there”

«Площадка у церкви волейбольная была, играли в волейбол. Много нас, по моему детству, так 13-14-15 лет, собиралось народу-то много, человек по 50 приедёт летом – бабкам в деревню спихивали. Потом там детские игры разные, фильмы отгадывать. Загадывали название фильма, а все отгадывают сидят. По одной букве назовёшь. Не отгадали – значит, снова идёшь. “Ладошки строишь” – помню это: там кто-то идёт, копеечку опускает туда (не помню уже, какая-то присказка там), успевали, чтобы тебя не задержали, выбежать»

“There was a volleyball court by the church, so we used to play volleyball. A lot of kids gathered there, 13-14-15 years old, I guess, around fifty people would come in the summer – they were pawn off, sent to their grandmothers in the village. We played different children’s games, too, like, guessing the names of the movies. You think of a movie, and the others would sit around guessing. One letter at a time. If they did not guess, you started again. Another one, “Making the palms”, I recall: there was one person coming around and putting their hands in everybody else’s palms one by one. In one person’s palms they dropped a coin (and there was some sort of chanting, I don’t remember it now). And the person who got the coin had to run out, and the others needed to catch them”

«Учительница устраивала концерты с учениками.  Молодежь-то была. Играли там и в волейбол, там сетка была волейбольная, и на танцы ходили, фильмы смотрели»

“Our school teacher organized concerts together with the students. There used to be many young people around. We used to play volleyball, there was a volleyball net; we went dancing, and we watched movies”

«Ну вот церковь вот эта, зимняя, она была переоборудована, потому что заходишь, сколько ступенек много, такая площадка, тут ещё коридор как бы и туда дальше коридор. Потому что церковь – так это, много там места-то, наверное, было и, где, может быть, служба была, там была сделана на правую руку сцена. Там кино, так туда смотрели, висела эта штука. И радиобудка была там сделана… Но служба ещё была. Я была небольшая, помню, в пятницу перед Пасхой ходили, когда приход службу, вот. А кто вёл, это я что-то такого я не помню. Но запомнила, что приходили вот с церкви, печку затопляли вечером и вот яички красили и всё, готовились к Пасхе. Вот этот эпизод как-то я запомнила»

“Well, take this church, the winter church, it was rebuilt. Once you entered, there used to be a lot of steps, and then there was a landing, and also a corridor, and another corridor further down. It used to be a church, so there was a lot of space there, and where there they held church services, on the right hand, they made a stage. Over there was the cinema, so we watched movies facing like that, and there was this thing hanging down there. And there was a radio booth, too… But the church services were still held. I recall, I was little, and on a Friday before Easter, we went to the church for the sermon. I do not remember, who was giving the sermon. But I remember when we came back from the church, we heated the stove in the evening and painted eggs, and we were preparing for Easter. Well, this episode I remember well”
