“Well, the old women would come out in the streets, and they would sing chastushki [four-line rhymed ditties on some topical or humorous theme – T.Zh.] with swear words – it made me feel ashamed, too”
«В помощи здесь никогда не отказывали. У меня дед не один дом построил, помогал многим. Ну, отказывать никогда не отказывали, когда попросишь. Да и сейчас точно также, к кому обращаешься – помогают»
“Here people were always ready to give you a hand. My grandfather helped build more than one house; he helped many people. Well, no one ever refused to help, if you asked. And even now it is the same, whoever you turn to – people will help you”

Холмы/The hills
«Зимой на лыжах катались. Тут горы, так всё с гор катались на лыжах»
“In winter we used to go skiing. There are mountains here, so mostly we used to ski from these mountains”
«Любили в снегу играть, как не любили! Помню, под взвозом выроем домик себе и играем там»
“We loved to play in the snow, how could we not! I remember, we would dig up a house under the vzvoz [an element of Russian wooden architecture, a log ramp leading to the second floor of a farmyard.] and play there”

Снег/Snow
«В церкви было уже сделано как клуб: сцена, будка, чтобы кино показывать. Киноаппараты стояли. Все фильмы советские, какие были. Я даже в 1972 году ходила, смотрела “Женщина, которая поёт”, он [клуб] ещё тогда не сгорел. Мы с соседкой бегали в кино, смотрели фильмы»
“The church was turned into the club: there was a stage, and a film booth. There were film projectors, too. All the films were Soviet. In 1972, I still went there, and even watched “The Woman who Sings” [a Soviet film], the club was still functioning; it had not yet burned down. I went there with my neighbor; we went to the cinema together”

«Вот здесь, где баня, тут стоял амбар для снастей и ребята любили кататься у реки, когда лёд был, на коньках. Коньки-то раньше были такие – привязывали к обуви»
“Here, where the bathhouse is, there used to be a barn for fishing gear, and the kids liked to skate by the river when there was ice. The skates were different then – we had to tie them to our shoes”
«Вот в лесничество всё ходили, играли там. За два километра лесничество. Там да, там здание было такое большое. Здание здоровое, лесничий жил. Так мы туда бегали, играли»
“We used to go to the forestry to play there. The forestry was two kilometers away. There used to be a large building there. Where the forest warden used to live. An enormous building. So we used to go there to play”

«Бабки наговаривали там на кого-то [сглаз], нехорошие, были такие. Ну, это поколение старое, может быть, отсюда третье-четвертое [поколение] туда в ту сторону»
“Some old women could put a hex on somebody, they were kind of evil. Well, it was the old generation, you know, three or four generations ago”
«Ну, тяжело же всё равно было, что без родителей. Неделю мы жили, да, неделю дежурили. Например, воду, дрова, посуду сами мыли, полы сами мыли – это дежурство было. На кухне по два человека дежурили»
“Well, it was hard anyway, living without parents. We lived there for the whole week, and we needed to do the chores. For example, to fetch water, to chop firewood, to do the dishes and to wash the floors – this meant “to be on duty”. And there were two people on duty in the kitchen”
