Во второй раз, говорят, не пустили. Я уж не знаю, вот всё ведь со слов. Но сопротивление им оказывали, короче говоря»

“How can one not be proud of this? They say there are only two monuments of this sort in Russia. The second one is somewhere near the Black Sea. Maybe this is just a myth. But we didn’t let them here, oh no! They arrived for the first time, and all [the villagers] ran away and hid. So they [the British soldiers] grabbed some cows and calves, and some provisions, and left. The second time they came – we did not let them pass. I cannot know for sure, it’s all just from hearsay. But we did resist, to make a long story short ”

«Когда англичане здесь нападали, это 1854–1856 вроде годы. Они, ну, как я слышал, в Пушлахте (но в Пушлахте – там легче было зайти, там же губа) чуть не всю деревню сожгли, а у нас дали отпор. Вот где вот маяк-то, там типа окопов было сделано. Вот мне своя бабушка говорила, что они [английские солдаты] стали выезжать на лодке, а отсюда стреляли, и кому-то попало там – и они обратно. А потом постреляли по деревне, баню сожгли, да ещё чего-то загорело. У нас-то всё равно близко не подойдёшь. А на памятнике, говорят, это ядра не те, старые. Там же, если стреляли, так не столько пушек было, калибр-то какой-то должен быть определённый. А тут снизу такие ядра, а уже вверху другие размером. Ну, не должно такого быть, что ядра мол насобираны и из этого основание памятника сделано, нет»

“When the British attacked us, it was in 1854-1856. I heard that they burned down almost the whole village in Pushlakhta (but it is easier to reach Pushlakhta because of the bay), and here we beat the attack. Where there is the lighthouse, people built some kind of trenches. My grandmother told me, that they [the British soldiers] started approaching by boat, the villagers started shooting, some were wounded, and they had to turn away. They just gave a few shots at the village, burned down a bathhouse, and some other buildings caught fire. They couldn’t get close to us anyway. And those cannon balls at the monument, they are not authentic, not the old ones. There couldn’t have been so many cannons, and the caliber must have been a specific one. You can see that the cannon balls at the top and the bottom of the monument are of different diameters. So I don’t think that these cannon balls were collected back then and installed at the base of the monument, no”

«Давно же этот памятник поставлен был, а он же требовал ремонта, и вот основание у нас дедушка его ремонтировал. Ну, конечно, вот этим памятником-то горжусь. Конечно. Больше в Лямце таких и мест-то нету: ни церкви, ничего такого, только вот эта достопримечательность основная, вот этот вот памятник»

“This monument was erected many years ago and it needed repair, my grandfather repaired the foundation. So, of course, I am proud of this monument. There are no such other places in Lyamtsa: there’s no church, this is the main attraction, we only have this one monument”
