“When we were small children, the grownups used to put sweets on the graves and said: “Look over there, they [the spirits – T.Zh.] left some treats for you, look better…”, and they would put some candies or an egg”
«Мы любили картошку всех больше, картошку копать любили. Костёр разожгёшь, да печёнок напечёшь, картошки наешься! Потому и рады были, что печенки. Сенцов весь класс, всю школу пошлёт туда – и давай»
“We liked harvesting potatoes most of all, we enjoyed digging up potatoes. It was cool to make a fire, and to bake some potatoes, and eat them! We liked it because we could have some, that is why. So Sentsov would send the whole class, or the whole school – and off we went”
«Ну, своей деревней уж, я думаю, что все гордились. Потому что, вот уже учась в институте, уезжаешь в автобусе – слезы на глазах и въезжаешь – тоже, как только вот увидел Кянду»
“Well, I think everyone was proud of their village. Because when you were studying at the institute, and you left home on the bus, your eyes were swelling with tears, and when you came back - you had tears in your eyes, too, as soon as you saw Kyanda”

«Помню, он нас угощал шоколадом, вот Федор Федорович. И вот сейчас какого мы только не пробовали, мы такого ещё не ели»
“I remember, he [Fyodor Fyodorovich – T.Zh.] treated us with some chocolate. And whatever chocolate I have eaten since, none of it is as delicious as that one”
«В снегу-то домики делали. Ещё так, чтобы можно было пролезть: одна комната, другая комната»
“We would make manholes in the snow. So that you could crawl from one chamber to another, like in a small house”
«Бабушка на продольники [патерностерные лески в рыбалке – Т.Ж.] пойдет, меня разбудит. А мне и в школу надо, и ей ночью надо [помочь] продольники смотреть идти. Продольники – это нитка такая. Ну обычно из конского волоса сделана, такой длинны, может быть, метра 3. И крючки навязаны так, друг от друга сантиметров 20-ть, наверное. И на кол ставится. Два кола, вот. Червей накопаешь на море – наживка. Червей наживишь и уйдёшь. После вода прибудет, вот камбалы напопадает – надо смотреть. Другой раз ночью надо. Тогда уже лёд, лёд на лужах. С бабушкой босиком идём, холодина такая. Думаешь: «Быстрее бы до воды!» В воду зайдешь – так тепло, так тепло ногам!»
“When my grandmother had to go to check on the ‘prodol’niki’ [paternoster lines in fishing – T.Zh.], she would wake me up at night. I had to go to school in the morning, but I also had to help my grandmother to check on the fishing lines at night. The prodol’niki were a kind of fishing tackle. Usually it was a thread made of horsehair, about three meters long. It had hooks attached at intervals to the main line, every 20 cm or so. And you would tie it to a rod. Or two rods. You would dig up some worms as fishing bait, hook the worms and leave. Then at high tide, some plaice would get on the hooks. And you had to go check on the lines, sometimes at night. There was ice, the puddles were icy. We walked barefoot, it was freezing. And I would think: “I need to reach the river faster!” I would run into the water and think: “Ahh, it is so warm, my feet are so warm!”

“In the wintertime we used to make snow passages. We would sit there, and even light up a candle. It was like a hideout”

«Идут на это старое кладбище, потом берут с собой, у кого что есть, там уж, я не знаю, как. Там они сидят, песни поют на этой, лужайка такая была, у реки – вот это их любимое место было. На Вое. Вот тут вот эти два домика, Новая-то деревня, а тут всё заросло, весь лужок, там были поля ещё»
“People would go to the old cemetery and bring some food with them. And they would sit on the lawn, there used to be a lawn by the river, it used to be their favorite spot. On the Voya. Here are these two houses, the Novaya village, and over there everything had overgrown with weeds, where the lawn and the fields used to be”
«Но раньше-то на дороге столбы же стояли и по столбам можно было направление определить, куда ты идёшь – в Нижмозеро или в Кянду. Там как-то по возрастающей нумерация-то идет, и дети всегда считали: о, столько прошли, столько ещё осталось. Нижмозёра-то, бедные, всё пешком ходили же в школу»
“But before that, there used to be some road poles, and they showed the directions, where you were going – to Nizhmozero or to Kyanda. The poles were numbered in the ascending order, so the children could count: we walked so and so many kilometers, and so and so many were still ahead. Those poor kids from Nizhmozero, they had to walk to school on foot all the time”
«Безопасно всегда было, и дежурили, вот по деревне дежурили, была колотушка. Стучали, что идут, не сильно стучали-то, вот что ходят… Ночью, ночью, до двенадцати, даже, может, до часу, и потом приходили – расписывались и уходили… В Багдаде все спокойно. Это я помню»
“It had always been safe, and there used to be volunteer public order patrols, they were walking around the village with a rattler. And they would make noise signals as they were approaching, but not very loudly. They would patrol the streets until midnight, or until one a.m., and then they would sign in and leave. “All is quiet in Bagdad!” This is what I remember!”
«А у меня мать рыбачила. Бабушка отправит, и вот я с другом. Что нам было? Ещё в 1-то класс мы не ходили, наверное, или в 1-й класс пошли. «Отнеси матери лепёшки!» Лепешки из гнилой картошки такие. Картошку собирать не давали, а весной-то насобираем с бабушкой, тут и крахмал-то есть. Вот она напекёт, и вот несёшь матери туда. И вот мы идём 8 км туда, до Кяндского, такие пацаны. И никакой, ни медведя, ничего, даже в голову не приходило, что кто-то встретится! И там неделю живёшь»
“My mother used to go fishing. And my grandmother would send me over there with a friend. How old were we? We did not go to the 1st grade yet, or maybe we did. “Go get your mother some flatbreads!” And these flatbreads were made of rotten potatoes. We were not allowed to gather potatoes, but in the spring, my grandmother and I would gather some old potatoes in the fields, and hence we got some starch. Then she would bake some flatbreads and send me to my mother. And we would walk 8 kilometers up to Kyanda, such small lads. Stayed there for a week. The thoughts of meeting a bear, or some evil person, did not even cross our minds, we feared no danger!”

“The dogs and the crows are picking up garbage. And the garbage goes into the river. The river is very close by”.

“Well, the local priest had a very good reputation, as he treated people very well. But he was later exiled”
«Как бы небольшая обида есть всё-таки за такие вот места, потому что это действительно значимые места для деревни»
“I fell kind of hurt for places like this because these are really significant places for the village”
«А ещё вот по деревьям ползали. Здесь по своим залезешь, тут березы стояли, теперь черемуха, там вот через дом по тем березам, а дом был нежилой, там сзади, ну вот эти же бревна неровно и как по ступенькам. И тут такой склад был, и в снег, и опять. Такие догонялки» ”
“And we also climbed up those trees. Here you would climb up, where there used to be some birch trees, and a bird cherry now; then from the birches on and over that house, it was uninhabited; then at the back, down those logs like the stairs, and then on the storage house, and then you would jump down in the snow. And all over again! Kind of a catch-up game!”

«У нас такая хорошая, Света. Такой нигде нету, вот такая у нас. В общем, придёшь – душа радуется, даже не то, что вот тут как вот съездишь. И вот она даже предложит сама, сама предложит. Придёшь: «Ну чего будем?» Не только ко мне, вот не только ко мне она, вот в отпуске вызовут ее ночью. В общем, можно написать, прекрасный специалист, очень хороший, нигде такого нету… Аптека, у неё стеллажи такие, чего надо – приходишь заказываешь. Ну если нет у неё, вот, а она едет в Онегу и покупает»
“We have such a good feldsher, Sveta. There are no people like her anywhere, she is unique. When you come to the FAP, it warms your heart. When you come, she asks: “Well, what shall we do?” And she offers her help, her assistance. Not only to me, not only to me, she might get called in when she is on vacation, or at night. In general, you can put it down, that she is an excellent specialist, a very good one, such people are hard to find... In the pharmacy, she has such shelves, and you can come in and order whatever medicine you need. If she does not have it, she goes to Onega and buys it”

“It looks like the whole village used to be fenced in. Even some time ago, when we went to pick blueberries, already at a mature age, so to say, there was a fence. It had collapsed already, but it was still there, it had not decayed yet”
«Бумаги нет писать, чернил нет. Из свеклы делали чернила, из сажи делали чернила. Я так церковные книги использовал. У деда их было много с Соловков привезено… Писали перьеми. То палочки прицепишь, намотаешь, вот так. Ручки уже позднее появились, уже не было чернильниц даже»
“We had no paper and no ink to write in. We made ink from beetroots or from soot. I used church books for writing. My grandfather had brought lots of church books from Solovki… We wrote with quills. We attached sticks, tied them, like this. Pens appeared later, but before there were even no inkwells”
«Ну, Света будет работать, и Шемякина она вроде тоже, если здоровье позволит. Я говорю: «Света, ты нас не бросай». Нам так помощь не окажут в городе, как здесь. И капельницу поставят. И вызовешь – она тебе уколы сделает в любое время. И вообще, она очень доброжелательная. Так она теперь ещё и Пурнему обслуживает»
“Well, Sveta will continue to work, and Shemyakina, too, if her health permits. I told her, “Sveta, don't leave us”. They will not give us as much assistance in the city as they do here. They can put you on a drip, if needed. And if you call her, she’ll give you an injection anytime. She’s very friendly. So now she’s also working for Purnema”

«Но у нас, в принципе, сейчас вот люди бы и хотели бы купить дома. Дома сейчас или они стоят в полуразрушенном состоянии, но их всё равно не продадут, или у нас просто мест в деревне нет под строительство, всё. Тоже вот рядом дом, ну ведь завидная же территория, в буквальном смысле – завидная. Люди бы хотели бы с удовольствием. Дом уже развалился, дом уже нафиг никому не нужен»“But in general, people would like to buy houses here now. Although the houses are now in a dilapidated state, they cannot be sold, but we just do not have any places in the village for new construction, that’s all. Look, there is this house next door, it is situated in an envious location, literally envious. People would love to purchase it. The house has already fallen apart; the owner does not need the house”

“At first, there used to be a kolkhoz office, the piping was installed, and the radio station afterwards. There was a post office on the second floor. And when the roof started leaking, they had to close the post office”
«Вот удочки такие: леса 10 номер – нитка, крючок. Кто раздобудет, кто нет – все поделятся. Вот рыбы наловишь вот такой, уху сваришь. Если у кого картошка есть, так тот картофелину принесёт. Ну хлеба-то, конечно, ни у кого не было»
“Our fishing rods were like that: a fishing line No. 10 or a thread, and a hook. Whether you had one, or not, it did not matter, somebody would share with you. So here you were, you would catch some fish, you would cook a fish soup (‘ukha’). If you had potatoes, you would bring them, too. No one had any bread, of course”

The hedges, the fences
«Вот школу построили. Сначала они [Агафёловы] не как школу построили, а склад. Года ведь бывают, что хлеб помёрзнет. Они для жителей там зерно хранили, чтобы после помочь в голодные годы. А после, а после они переделали – сделали школу. Решили, что должны учиться, молодежь. До революции-то 4 класса было. А потом семилетка была, да. Было же здесь очень много жителей»
“Well, the school was built. At first, it was not used as a school, they (the Agaphyolov family) built it as a warehouse. There had been lean years when the crops were frostbitten. So they would store grain, to help the villagers during the famine. Afterwards they reconstructed it into a school. They decided that young people had to go to school and study. Before the revolution, there were only 4 grades. Later, it was a seven-grade school. Lots of people lived in our village back then”
«Когда горел соседний дом, мы тогда думали: не приведи Господь, загорится это здание, мы останемся полностью. На Кянде можно было поставить крест, потому что там было всё! Там и почта, и магазин, там и связь, там и медпункт. Потом всё разъехалось»
“When the neighboring house was burning, we thought at the time: God forbid, if this building catches fire, too, we will lose everything. You could kiss Kyanda goodbye, because everything was there! There was the post office, the store, the communication center, and the medical center. Later all the offices moved out”
«А мы жили, чего там, яслей не было, садиков не было, сами себе были предоставлены, но ничего, как говорится, нигде ничего не разбивали, мы все как-то дружно жили. Ходили босиком. Только снег сошел, всё – никакой обуви тут! И босиком по лесу, только сучья трещат! Бежишь, даже где хлеб-то скосят, так уже сейчас и не ступишь, а мы бежим, это все под нами трещало. Обуви не давали, обуви не давали. Снег растает – всё»
“Well, this is how we lived. There were no nurseries, there were no kindergartens, we were left to ourselves, but nothing bad ever happened to us, no one got hurt. We were very united. Once the snow was gone, we took off our shoes. We walked barefoot. And we ran barefoot in the forest and the twigs cracked under our feet! Or in the summer, during crop harvesting, you could hardly put your foot down, but you still ran, and it was all cracking under you. Our parents did not allow us to wear shoes; they did not give us the shoes. So once the snow melted down – we were barefoot”

«Вот есть, допустим, дома, которые люди бы купили бы в свое время, пусть даже не дома, уже участки, потому что домов как таковых не осталось, но где-то живут родственники. Дома не оформлены ничего и, в общем-то, бесхозные дома. Люди бы купили, построили, может быть, что-то красивое»
“There are, let's say, some houses that people might have bought at some time, even not the houses, rather, the plots of land, because there are no houses as such left, but there are living relatives somewhere. The relatives had not bothered with any paperwork, so officially the houses have no owners. But if they had, other people might have bought them, and built new beautiful houses”
«Любили по огородам зимой ходить. «Как будем играть?» – «в ляпы!». И вот по огородам пойдёшь. Конечно, старики ругались, ну, особенно отцы. Им же делать, ремонтировать-то огороду. А нам-то главное –пройти эти расстояния-то большие! Надо же балансировать. Придёшь: «Что тут, это самое, пашешься?», «на печку!»
“We liked climbing the fences in the winter. “What are we gonna play?” - “Let’s play chaser” (‘lyapy’). And so you would start crawling along the fence. The old men would scold us for doing that, especially our fathers, because they built those fences, and they would have to repair them. And for us the main thing was to keep crawling, to cover all those long distances, to keep your balance! So there you go, and they start brawling: “What the heck are you doing? Get on the stove now!”
«Вот, до Копанца ходил теплоход, сначала ходил «Восток», а потом я-то на «Балтийце» приехала. Вот приехала сюда, свету здесь не было, по улице была грязище такая, что на ту сторону без сапог не перейдешь, но в клуб всё равно ходили. А в клубе лампочки висели. Неля Николаевна (её уже теперь в живых нет) на гармошке поиграет, а мы и потанцуем, и попляшем. Кино было, в кино ходили»
“Here, there were motorships going to Kopanets, first “The Vostok”, and later I arrived on “The Baltiyets”. When I came here, there was no street lighting, the street was so dirty that you could not cross to the other side without high boots, but we went to the club anyway. And in the club, there was electricity. Nelya Nikolaevna (she is no longer alive) would play the accordion, and we would dance a lot. There was a movie theater, so we went to the movies, too”
«За листом да за вениками ходили… А раньше ведь попробуй где травинку-то найди! Это всё ведь окашивали, горбушами в колхозе-то даже кусты окашивали»
“We went to the forest to gather leaves and whisks… because it was almost impossible to find some grass or twigs in the village. In the kolkhoz, they mowed it all down; they even mowed the shrubs with hunchback scythes”
«Новый год, принесём с братом ёлку, а та пахнет! Всё игрушки-то свои, бумажные. Режем фонарики такие да гирлянды. Вот, все игрушки были свои сделаны. Брат у нас рисовал хорошо, да из дерева так сделает что-то. Из ольхи, помню, лошадка»
“On New Year’s day, my brother and I brought in a fir tree, and it smelt so good! All the decorations were made of paper. We made paper lanterns and festoons. All the decorations were handmade. My brother was good at drawing and woodcarving. He could carve something out of wood. I remember a small horse he made from alder wood”
«Вот леший любил что-то из вещей себе оставлять. То есть девушки часто оставляли там платки или вот что-то такое. А домового чтобы задобрить, нужно было сладкую плюшку положить и молока налить. Именно под русскую печь поставить. То есть вот где топка у русской печи, внизу есть подпечье, вот именно в подпечье»
“It was believed that the leshy [a forest spirit – T.Zh.] liked to steal and keep things for himself. Like a girl’s kerchief, for example. And in order to placate the domovoy [a household spirit – T.Zh.], one had to leave a sweet bun and a bowl of milk under the Russian stove. That is, in ‘podpech’ye’ [in the fireside of the Russian stove, small place under the stove to store utensils – T.Zh.”]
«На Кяндозеро мы бегали. Там часовня была, Калистратовы жили, мельница была, дом двухэтажный был… Там у них, как забегаешь, морковь садилась, так она [хозяйка]: «Вы, ребята, не рвите морковь, я сама вам дам», – говорит»
“We used to run to Kyandozero Lake. There was a chapel there, the Kalistratovs lived there, and there was a mill, and a two-storied house... There, as soon as you ran in the yard, some carrots were planted, so she (the owner of the house) used to say: “Hey, kids, do not pull the carrots, I'll give them to you myself”
«Уйдут родители-то, ещё маленькие были, пойдём поиграем, покачаемся. Теперь качели, раньше «голубало» было. Это деревянное корыто… Ах мы раскачиваемся, раскачиваемся, потом вылетим – и всё. Вот так мы играли»
“When we were small, when our parents went away, we would go play and swing. The swings were different back then, there was a ‘golubalo’, a wooden trough…And we swung, we swung, and then we flew out of it. That’s how we used to play”
Свой дом /My place
Клуб «старый» (в бывшей зимней церкви во имя Вознесения Господня)/The old club (a community center situated in the former winter Сhurch of the Ascension of the Lord)
«А ещё школьный огород был. Грабли-то такие были, острые-то. На нас весь огород оставляли полоть и поливать. А чего нам ещё? Наверное, лет по 9 или 10 было»
“The school had a vegetable garden. We worked with rakes, and they were quite sharp. We had to weed and water the whole vegetable garden. How old were we? I’d say, nine or ten years old”
«Маленькие дети не ходили в клуб, было запрещено. Постарше, постарше, вот как мы, они приходили посмотреть. Сидели и смотрели. Они уже не плясали, не танцевали. Это я запомнила»
“Little kids were not allowed to the club. Older kids, teenagers like us, could come to watch. So we would just sit and watch. We did not dance. This I recall”
