“The forest was well maintained. By the brook, somebody would always make a water scoop out of birch-bark, chip a stick and put it on a shrub. When another person came, he could take it, drink water from the brook, then put it back and say thank you”

«Тогда заставляли в колхозе: как летом школу кончили – и всё, на сенокосы, поля засаживали и до самой школы, пока в школу не пойдёшь. Никаких мест не было любимых. Не давали играть, не было такого»

“They made us work for the kolkhoz: as soon as school was over, we had to go to the fields for haymaking and sowing and worked until the next school year started. I didn’t have any favorite places. They did not let us play, nothing of the sort”

«Мелким ещё начал рыбачить. Всё тётка вспоминала: на сенокосе кушак от платья привязала к палке, посадила у речки, говорит: “Сиди, лови”. А сами сено косят. А я в школу-то не ходил, наверное. Вот откуда рыбалка-то началась. А где? Меня здесь не с кем было оставлять, так что…»

“I was a little tyke when I started fishing. My auntie used to recall: once during the haymaking, she took her dress girdle off, tied it to a stick and left me by the river, saying: “Stay here and fish!” And they went on haymaking. I didn’t go to school yet, I think. That’s how my fishing started. How else? There was nobody to look after me…”

«Пугали бабаем. Папа убьёт дичь, крыло положит к печке: “Не подходи к печке – там бабай!” Вот боялись бабая. До сих пор вот помнится, ещё и своих малых пугала так, что бабай»

“They used to scare me with the babai [a night spirit]. My father would shoot some game, put a wing by the stove and say: “Don’t go near the stove – the babai lives there!” and we were scared of it. I still remember it, and afterwards I used to scare my little ones like that, too.”

«Девчонки, которые постарше меня, любили вечерами ходить, песни петь да частушки, прямо по деревне. Иногда придумывали частушки как самоделки: “Гуси-лебеди летели прямо с юга на восток, увидали нашу [имя] на кровати без порток”»

“The girls older than me would walk in the evening along the village streets and sing songs and chastushki. Sometimes of their own making, like: ‘Geese were flying over village

after midnight party dance, Saw [name] in the bedroom wearing no underpants’”

«Клуб в тёплой церкви был. Там и танцы, и концерты, и всё там было. И был патефон, и была гармонь. Особенно помню, ну мы класс, наверное, седьмой-восьмой, – тогда была “Летка-енка”. Так до четырёх часов утра танцевали, а останавливаться-то нельзя… Вот, до 4 часов утра. Ну, у нас гармонисты были»

“There used to be the club in the heated church. There were dance parties and concerts, and everything. And there were a gramophone and an accordion, too. I especially remember (we were probably in the seventh or eighth grade) doing the Letkajenkka dance. So we danced until four o’clock in the morning, and we couldn’t stop... So there we were, dancing until four o’clock in the morning. Well, we had guys to play the accordion”

«Хороводы водили в старой школе за рекой. Вот с частушками и с песнями. Больше, наверное, такие, ну, из первых годов советской власти, так сказать. Не совсем старые, а пионерские пели песни. За руки брались вместе с учителями. И парни тоже ходили»

“We would do the circle dance [a type of the traditional Russian dance] in the old school across the river. We sang chastushki [four-line rhymed ditties on some topical or humorous theme] and other songs. Mainly from the first years of the Soviet rule, so to say, not very old ones. Some pioneer songs, too. We held hands with the teachers. And the boys were there, too”

«А зимой хоть угоры тогда были, не заросли ничего, так катались на санках. Катались! Ребятня на лыжах, а девки на санках катались, зимой-то».

“And in winter at least there were the hills then, they were not overgrown like now, so we used to go sledding. Sledding, yes! The kids skied, and the young girls sledded in winter”

«Рыбачили, любили! Как придём из школы, даже вот если вода тут полная, так и на море быстро сбегаем, на рыбалку. Душа отдыхает!»

“We loved fishing! We used to come home from school and run straight to the sea to catch some fish, even at high tide. It really put your mind at rest!”
