“I love going to the lakes to fish. There is so many fish! Sea fish, for instance: saffron cod, smelt, flounder, whitefish, roach, perch, pike, burbot, bull trout, common trout, salmon”
«А я здесь всю жизнь, родилась, прожила, так я никуда не поеду. Я не могу даже в городе ночевать-то нигде. Я даже дома, вот здесь, в деревне, вот к сестре сходить – я не буду там ночевать, я на своём месте, вот только дома. Если я на другой диван или там кровать повалилась, мне не уснуть будет. Я привыкла у себя вот тут, на своем месте, и всё. Так что я никуда не ездила и не поеду!»
“I was born and I have lived here all my life, so I’m not going anywhere. I can’t sleep anywhere except in my own bed. I can’t stay overnight anywhere in the city. Even at home, here, in the village, when I go to my sister’s house – I cannot sleep there, only at my place, only at home. If I lie on somebody else’s sofa or bed, I won’t be able to fall sleep. I’m used to my place here, and that’s it. So I didn’t go anywhere before and I am not going anywhere now!”

“The river is overgrowing, and there are islands forming on the exposed riverbed. Such beautiful islands! Yeah, they are beautiful, but the river is getting shallow. My grandmother did not let me go to Sutovo to swim, because it was very deep there, and many people drowned. And now there are cows standing in the water, and the water barely reaches their udders, or their knees”

«Вот колхоз жалко, у нас сотня коров была, теперь только и той (одной), наверное, нету. Лучше общее. Вообще колхоз бы лучше, а не частное предприятие... Государственно должно всё, оно быстрее подчиняется всему и быстрее отстраивается. А попробуй какой-нибудь частник какой завод – да это с ума сойти, что-то строить, какую-нибудь деталь делать! Надо с тем заводом связаться, с тем заводом, тот то поставит, тот то, тот цены разные гонит, то сё, не получается, а когда общегосударственное сказал: «Всё, цена… Ты это поставляешь, ты это поставляешь, этот, этот…». Только бы сбыт был куда»
“I feel sorry for the kolkhoz, we had a hundred cows, and now we don’t have a single one, I guess. It was better when everything belonged to all of us. A kolkhoz would be better than a private company… Everything must be state-owned, it’s better for management and development. Just think of it – how could one man manage an enterprise, to manufacture some small part or build something, that’s absolute crazy! You have to contact this plant and that factory, they would supply this thing and another, they would charge different prices, something would go wrong… And the state-owned enterprise would say, ‘This is the price… You supply this, and you supply that.’ We just need to know where to sell the product”

«На рыбалку! Рыбалка – это всё, это слабость. Сначала летом, на зимней рыбалке я вообще раньше никогда не была, а сейчас вот зимняя рыбалка чаще, даже больше люблю… Нет, нельзя сказать, что больше люблю, зимой просто больше времени ходить на рыбалку. Я практически раз в три дня на рыбалке, разная рыба… Вот где Сутово, вниз туда спускаемся, там сиговник. Немножко дальше Севастьянские острова есть, там корюшатник, там камбалы ловятся. За навагой на море ездим»
“Fishing! Fishing means everything to me, it is my passion. I used to fish in summer, and I didn’t use to go ice fishing. But now I go ice fishing even more often, and I like it better. No, I cannot say that I like it better, rather, I have more time for fishing in winter. Almost once every three days I go fishing, I know different fishing spots. For example, if you go down to Sutovo, you can catch whitefish. If you go a bit further, to the Sevast’yanskiye Islands, you can catch smelt and plaice. And for navaga you need to go to the sea”

“The medical station was closed, but the village is not a small one, and it is a drive through at that. Say, something happens in the summer houses (dachas), where are people supposed to go? If we had a medical station, they could come here. We have a building ready”

«Памятники, потому что вложено столько! Реставрировали все памятники! Марьина Лахта, тоже памятник. Там только чисто ТОСом ходили, делали. Не это, не субботник, население не привлекали. А вот эти уже памятники – здесь, конечно, было намного больше работы»
“The monuments, because so much effort was invested in them! All the monuments were restored! The monument in Maryina Lakhta, too. It was repaired by the local administration. No, not subbotniks, we did not involve the villagers in this. But these monuments, yes, they required so much work”

«Такая небольшая была часовня на кладбище. Всё кладбище-то завалено, у гаражей, там вообще его нет, снесено всё. Вот когда гаражи построили, там всё и завалили. Много там было чего, захламили, в общем, короче говоря»
“There used to be a small chapel in the cemetery. The whole cemetery is cluttered up now, especially by the garages, it is almost gone, everything was destroyed. It was all cluttered up when the garages were built. To cut it short, there was a lot of rubbish, all cluttered up it was”

“All over Russia villages have been destroyed, so what? Of course, we need the school, but there are very few children here now. Good Lord, what a school it was! And this new school building was torn down. The new one! It had a primary school, and a kindergarten. But the new authorities did not need the school, no…”

“Well, right now we do not have a club here, the club was destroyed, everything was destroyed! But I am a people person, so I communicate with all the neighbors. I have some friends, so I communicate with them, too. So this is it, and also the children come to visit”
«Надо, чтобы за каждым домом заброшенным кто-то следил. Хозяев нету – убирать, а то они стоят как развалины, убирать надо. Хозяев нету – имеют право»
“We need to have someone watch over every abandoned house. No owners – nobody to clean, and the houses are just standing there like ruins; they need upkeeping. If there are no owners, people should have the right to go inside and clean”
Река/The river
«Вот сейчас мусорные контейнера поставили, а до этого не было. Вот те же дома старые перевозят, разбирали, ремонтируют, купили дом и чего? Всё, что там было, надо куда-то девать, вот и везут. Посмотрели, прикинули, привезли – вот тебе свалка»
“Now they have put garbage containers, but before that we didn’t have any. For example, when some old houses were transported, or dismantled, or renovated, if someone bought a house, there was a lot of debris and garbage left. And all this had to go somewhere, so they brought it here – and there was a dump”
ФАП/FAP
«Расположение хорошее. Красиво! Очень так, и море рядом, да сейчас застроили дачами. Тут все ходили, и старушки, и старики, навагу ловить. У каждого своя лунка, сеть – метку поставят, а теперь у всех машины, все как только раз: «Ааа, тут клюет» и как саранчи. Там, где-то: «Вот тут клюёт» - туда, а там загружено всё, всё вылавливается. Уничтожение идёт рыбы-то с этим транспортом»
“The location is very good. It is very beautiful! And the sea is close, only there are a lot of summer cottages there now. Both old men and women used to go fishing for navaga. Everyone had their holes in the ice, and they put down the nets, and marked their place. Now everyone has cars, so they drive from place to place like locusts: ‘Ah, there’s good fishing here.’ So there’s too much fishing, and too much fish is caught. “Agriculture has all been ruined, fisheries gone, but what else is here to do? What, tourism? One month a year, at most, and if the summer is warm, mind you. What if the summer’s no good? Right, then we’ll have nothing. Like this year, I brought my grandchildren here, but they can’t even go swimming, because it’s too cold”
«Рыба шла, рыбы было в реке много, а теперь все сетями этими капроновыми китайскими да разными, финскими, вылавливается и уничтожается всё! И на озёрах-то наставят, зацепили – бросят, удочкой удишь – зацепишь, там сетки, там по берегу валяются. Халатность такая у людей, не знаю. Лишь бы сгрести, а дальше трава не расти, очень халатно!»
“There was a lot of fish in the river, but now all fish is caught with these nylon Chinese or Finnish nets! All fishing spots are destroyed. They put nets in the lakes, and then just leave them behind. When you go fishing with a rod, you can catch a net, and there are more nets lying around on the shore. I don’t understand, why people are so negligent! They just want to catch more fish, as if there were no tomorrow! It is such a negligence!

“I feel proud for the playground, because we built it ourselves”
«На Пальниках-то всё засыпали мусором! Идём на море, и это ужас что натворено! Вот пока нам ещё только год или второй год мусорные ящики поставили, а до этого мы не знали, куда мусор выкинуть: то пойдём туда сунем, то туда, а сейчас хоть сделали. Пусть они с нас высчитывают, но мы зато знаем, куда нам нести мусор. А Пальники все завалены! Ужас!»
“They have covered everything with garbage in Palniki! When you are walking to the sea, it is horrible to see what they have done! It has been only a year or two since garbage containers have been installed, but before that we did not know where to throw garbage. So we would throw it here and there. But now we have garbage containers. We need to pay for that, but at least we have a place for garbage now. But Palniki is full of garbage. It is terrible!”
«У нас здесь был мужик-медик. Он сейчас где? В Пурнеме, ну где-то туда он ездит. Ему наобещали кучу, там в три короба, наверное. А что? Он потом дровами не знал как печку растопить, дали такую хибару! Тут и холодища, дров не было запаса. В ФАП не было никогда капитального ремонта. Как там жить и работать?»
“There was a man, a paramedic, here. Where is he now? In Purnema, he is working there. They promised him a lot of stuff, I guess. Well what do you think? He didn’t know how to heat the stove with wood, they gave him such a shack! It was freezing, there was no firewood. The FAP has never had a major overhaul. How is one supposed to live and work there?”

“I would spend days at the sea! Now my legs are faltering, so I don’t go to the sea. But earlier, when the summer was coming to an end, in October, I would go to the sea to say goodbye. I would sit on the shore, make a fire, all by myself. And said goodbye to the sea. I did it every year”
«У нас нет тротуаров. Вот сейчас делают дорогу, машины будут носиться по-сумасшедшему, а детям даже (ну, хоть детям, хоть людям) ходить там всё время вдоль дороги. Тротуаров нет – по дороге надо идти, по краю»
“We have no sidewalks. They are building a new road, and the cars will be running here at crazy speeds, but the kids (well, both kids and grownups) will still have to walk along the road. No sidewalks – everybody will have to use the edge of the road”
